This CPD presentation will begin with an introduction to steel frame systems and then discuss the benefits of the systems, along with the testing, performance and standards that are relevant for these building systems.

A steel frame system, or SFS, is a building technique that creates a skeleton-like frame consisting of vertical steel columns and horizontal beams. These are constructed in a rectangular grid, creating supports for floors, walls and the roof, which are then attached to the frame.

Steel frame systems provide a structurally robust and dimensionally stable warm spaced wall construction that can be used with the majority of external finishes, across most applications.

Depending on site requirements and designs, steel frame systems can be provided as factory-constructed panels, or as stick systems for onsite construction. SFS is a modern method of construction, or MMC, which allows easy and fast construction of buildings.

Modern methods of construction are building processes that focus on off-site manufacturing. Building elements are designed and partially built offsite and delivered as units to be assembled. The result is faster and easier on-site construction, with little to no cutting or shaping required. The result is faster build times, and reduced on-site labour time, as well as improved build quality and compliance with standards. In addition, offsite construction reduces transport costs and minimises on-site waste (and the clean-up time required at the end of a project). Waste is also reduced off-site, as the factories are more able to recycle cuttings and unused pieces.
